Crystal Coupe

by Petrol Mum

The 2025 GV80 range has been consolidated based on buyer preferences and now stars a Coupe SUV variant. The GV80 Coupe is Genesis’ ultimate expression of luxury with unique features, interior colours, and materials coupled with progressive styling in a 5-seater SUV.

The GV80 Coupe features bespoke interior styling elements, including real carbon fibre trim, a flat-bottom steering wheel, contrast stitching and seatbelts, and Aluminium pedals. Its exterior styling has Coupe-exclusive 22-inch alloy wheels, front bumper, dual exhaust tips and rear spoiler.

The overwhelming popularity of the 3.5T AWD powertrain and optional Luxury Pack have seen both become standard across the 2025 GV80 range. The 3,470cc petrol V6 produces 279kW and 530Nm, uses 11.7L/100km on the official combined cycle, and for my week I used 13.7L/100km. The 2025 GV80 Coupe can accelerate from rest to 100km/h in just 5.7 seconds.

2025 GV80 includes the advanced, rear-wheel drive biased Genesis All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system, which optimally distributes torque based on a range of inputs and adopts a revised global tune suspension featuring bespoke settings for GV80 Coupe. In the GV80 Coupe, drivers can further enjoy the soundscape of a large-displacement high-performance exhaust note, using the Active Sound Design system.

An Integrated Drive Mode system has a series of modes designed to best suit the driving situation: Comfort, Eco, Sport and My Mode. An additional high-performance Sport+ drive mode is available for GV80 Coupe and these are chosen using the crystal rotary selector. My Mode allows you to adjust Engine/Transmission, Steering, and Suspension to your personal preference, but I spent the week in Comfort mode, as I felt this best suited the luxury SUV surrounding me.

There’s also a new Auto Terrain Mode system utilises AI to assess road conditions and can then precisely control the driving force by selecting the appropriate drive mode automatically, to enhance driver convenience. The system features Snow, Mud and Sand settings, each providing optimal torque distribution to ensure traction and performance.

An expanded selection of customisation and personalisation options for 2025 GV80 brings further choice for customers, the majority of whom build-to-order. These include 11 exterior colours, 11 interior colours and 5 trim garnishes. There are just two options offered on the 2025 GV80 and GV80 Coupe: Rear Seat Entertainment ($4,500) and Matte Paint ($2,000).

Behind the keyless entry on all four doors that have soft close functionality, the GV80’s minimalist interior is inspired by a Korean architectural ethos that emphasises the ‘Beauty of White Space’ while seamlessly blending cutting-edge technology with timeless sophistication. The 2025 GV80 range now boasts a 27-inch OLED Integrated Display, 18 speaker Bang & Olufsen Sound System, Fingerprint Recognition, Genesis Connected Car Services, and Over The Air (OTA) update capability.

In the Coupe, an ergonomic flat-bottom steering wheel in two-tone leather reinforces the focus on driving dynamics while maintaining an elegant interior image. Garnishes crafted from real carbon fibre and quilted Nappa leather upholstery featuring coupe-exclusive patterns and contrast stitching with matching seat belts further contribute to GV80 Coupe’s high-performance theme, but for me the cabin didn’t smell like a luxury vehicle.

Both front seats have powered adjustment for recline, forward/back, seat height front and rear, front leg extension, side bolstering, and 4-way lumbar, with the driver’s seat having two memory positions and the driver has access to adjust the recline and position of the passenger seat from the controls on the side of the seat. They are also cooled and heated, with the heating extending to the arm rest and the steering wheel for the driver.

The Ergo motion offers basic massage function on pelvis, waist or whole body with adjustment for intensity and the amount of time. There’s even mood control with vitality, delight, care and comfort options available. For keeping hydrated while relaxing there are small drink bottle storage cubbies in the front door cubbies and two cup holders in centre console have grippy sides and a removable base for easy cleaning.

From a technology standpoint, I liked the 3D showroom function on the infotainment menu as it gives you quick access to options such as the head-up display, cluster, and driver assistance, amongst others as it saves you having to navigate through menus to make these changes.

Android Auto needs to be connected using a USB cord, with two USB-C ports located at the front of the centre console under the cover along with one 12V socket and wireless charging also found here. The voice control only worked for me for making calls and when I tried to use it to change the radio station or set a destination on the sat nav the GV80 told me, “This feature is not supported.”

I was less fond of the amount the GV80 bonged though, as soon as I got into the vehicle it bonged at me, it was quite annoying. And once again in a Genesis I have driven there was an issue with the tyre pressure monitoring system, which told me I had a loss of pressure when I didn’t. Also, the Forward Attention Warning System that monitors the driver’s concentration had an error when I put my sunglasses on. Then at another point I had six error messages due to a problem with the front collision radar, the only thing that could have caused this was rain.

The 2025 GV80 features a suite of 10 airbags, including a front-centre side airbag, and many active safety features, but these 3.5 litre (V6) petrol versions are unrated by ANCAP. New Active Safety Features include Highway Driving Assist 2, In Cabin Camera, Upgraded Forward Collision Avoidance Assist 2, Upgraded Lane Following Assist 2 with hands on detection, and Upgraded Remote Smart Parking Assist 2.

The rear-view camera has a standard view, 3D view and 360-degree view with front and rear sensors. The GV80 also has auto lights and auto wipers and one feature I still like is when you change the setting it displays on the driver’s dash so you know what you have selected.

I found that there was ample head and leg room for me, but taller individuals may find the headroom a bit tight due to the sloping roof line. The rear seats have power adjustment for recline and forward/back as well as seat height adjustment, which offered good under thigh support. The rear seats are also heated and cooled and all of these functions can be adjusted from a menu under the infotainment screen from the front of vehicle.

The rear seats have two ISOfix/three rear tether child seat restraint points and my teenage son commented on the comfortable headrests and that they had multiple height adjustment, whereas many vehicles only have an up or down adjustment. The centre seat folds down as an armrest with a storage cubby and two cup holders at the front with grippy sides and a removable rubber mat in their base for easy cleaning. The drink bottle storage in rear door cubbies is suitable for small drink bottles only.

Rear passengers have digital temperature, mode, and air speed controls with adjustment also being available from the front climate controls. The two central air vents with individual direction and on/off controls and below air vents there are two USB-C ports and one 12V outlet and there are manual blinds on the rear windows. I did like the lovely thick mats on the rear floors, but there was no mat over the transmission tunnel.

The GV80 Coupe has a gesture open boot, but I found it difficult to make this work. The powered boot also has an open/close button on the tailgate located near the rear wiper, in the cabin and on the small side button on the side of the key fob. The large boot space has four substantial tie down points, one 12V socket, two lights and a nice carpet mat over the boot floor. I liked the stylish, foldable hard parcel shelf, but this was showing some signs of wear on one side.

The rear seats have a 60:40 split fold powered mechanism with a button in boot or on the side of the seats to raise and lower them, while the centre seat can be manually folded down to stow long items. The boot floor folds up and there is a good amount of extra storage under there along with the tyre repair kit, roadside assistance pack, and an excellent first aid kit.
