Aston Martin’s China Doll

by Petrol Mum

The most elegant convertible Aston Martin ever, the DB11 Volante, is now available in Australia. Joining the DB11 Coupe, the first product launched under the company’s ‘Second Century’ plan, the DB11 Volante sets new standards of performance, innovation, engineering and style to create the definitive open-top Sports GT.

Powered by a new 4.0-litre twin-turbo 510PS V8 engine, the DB11 Volante is built around the all-new bonded aluminium structure first seen in the DB11 Coupe. Lighter and more rigid than the model it replaces, the DB11 Volante has been engineered to deliver a much broader envelope of abilities. Greater levels of performance and handling accentuate the more sporting side of its character, while increased refinement, comfort and interior space ensure it remains a consummate grand tourer.

Visually the DB11 Volante features the striking single-piece aluminium bonnet and innovative ‘Curlicue’ aerodynamic feature from the DB11 Coupe, combined with new wood or carbon fibre veneer panels on the seat backs. The beautifully tailored fabric hood, available in a choice of Bordeaux red, black silver or grey silver, and the dramatic ultra-slim ‘light blade’ tail lights creates an end result that is a breathtakingly sleek and athletic form that perfectly expresses the DB11 Volante’s character.

Aston Martin believes there are seven segments in the car market with seven different ‘proxy’ customers. The proxy customer for the DB11 Coupe is ‘Marcus’ a German entrepreneur who is into the latest technology and is more with concerned with function over form.

The DB11 Volante and Coupe.

The DB11 Coupe, which the Volante is based on, has provided some sales surprises for Aston Martin considering who they consider its proxy customer to be. Aston Martin’s, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Simon Sproule revealed that “50% of sales of the V12 DB11 Coupe in China were to young female purchasers”. A result that Simon admitted Aston Martin can’t really explain, but they are very happy about it none the less.

The DB11 is a genuine Grand Tourer with wider door apertures, significantly increased occupant space – especially head and legroom in the rear, fully integrated rear ISOFIX mounting points for a pair of child seats plus a luggage compartment large enough to accommodate two large holdalls plus carry-on baggage. All these practical features are the kind that would appeal to women.

In addition, features like an inspiring palette of colours and a vast array of detailing options, means the interior can be perfectly in-tune with your unique personal style. From calming, carefully co-ordinated tones to sharp contrasts in hue and texture, your choices are virtually limitless.

Aston Martin has also created a new cross over called the DBX, which will available in 2019. The DBX aims to widen the appeal of the iconic British luxury brand and reach out to a more diverse global audience than ever before. It is no surprise at all that the proxy customer for the DBX is ‘Charlotte’.

Aston Martin’s own analysis has found that in addition to outright purchases, the key influencer in 60% of all sales of Aston Martins in the Asia Pacific market is women according to Patrik Nilsson, President, Asia Pacific.

The DB11 Volante Recommended Retail Pricing starts from AUD$398,495 plus on-road costs and first local deliveries are slated to commence from May 2018. For more information about the Aston Martin range contact your local dealer.
